Last week, the IAAEU Summer School for Young Researchers in European Labour Law took place for the first time at the University of Trier. This event brought together students, PhD candidates, and postdocs from across the EU interested in labour law issues to discuss questions regarding Platform work in European labour law and develop their own ideas.
On the first day, over 20 participants were warmly welcomed by the President of the University of Trier, Prof. Dr. Eva Martha Eckkrammer, the Dean Prof. Dr. Birgit Peters und the Director of the IAAEU, Prof. Dr. Daniel Ulber, and were invited to the opening lecture by Prof. Dr. Dres. h.c. Monika Schlachter. There she introduced the Platform Work Directive 2024, the potential implementation problems, and evaluated the implementation in Germany.
After that, the guests formed groups for the week-long group phases, which accompanied the event’s programme. The groups prepared a presentation of the key features of the labour law framework regarding platform work in a EU member state of choice and analysed potential protection gaps affecting platform workers. It served the purpose to facilitate an in-depth examination of the platform directive as well as fostering academic networking.
The first day of the Summer School was already a resounding success, and we would like to thank all the participants for their contribution to this event.
