The IAAEU participated in the Annual Conference of the European Society for Population Economics (ESPE), held in Helsinki and Espoo, Finland, from 11 to 13 June 2026. The conference brought together researchers from around the world to present and discuss recent advances in population economics and related fields.
Dr. Yue Huang presented the paper “She Manages the Money – He Spends It: Income Management and the Spousal Expenditure Gap in Japan”, co-authored with Björn Becker, a former staff member at the IAAEU. The study examines how household income management is associated with expenditure patterns between spouses in Japan. Using data from the Japanese Panel Survey of Consumers, the analysis shows that, compared to households following other income management styles, wives in households where they manage the entire household income spend significantly less on themselves relative to their husbands. The findings contribute to a better understanding of intra-household decision-making and the allocation of financial resources within families.
The conference provided an excellent opportunity to present ongoing research, receive valuable feedback, and exchange ideas with researchers from different countries and disciplines. We thank the organisers for hosting a stimulating and well-organised event.
